Vellarappally near Kalady, the Thiruvairanikkulam Mahadeva Temple is one of the most famous Shiva-Parvathy shrines of South India. A religious centre is Kalady – the birthplace of the great Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara. One fact that makes this temple distinctly different from another is that the deities depicted here are Shiva and Parvathy and they face in different directions. Something more special about this temple is that the shrine of Goddess Parvathy is open only for twelve days in a year.

The main deity Lord Shiva is towards the east side and Goddess Parvathy on the west side. The believers also firmly think that the Lord Shiva and goddess Parvathy grace the couples and makes their married life happier and wealthy. The idol of Lord Nandikeshwara is external to the sanctum of the temple and is placed in front while Lord Vigneshwara is placed south to the sanctum facing east.
Inside the temple the protector goddess Sathidevi and goddess Kali are placed in the Mithunam Rasi and facing west. Lord Dharmasastha also called Kaliyugavaradan graces in Kanni Rasi and the four armed Vishnu in Kumbham Rasi, for south facing. Thiruvairanikkulam Mahadeva Temple only establishes itself as a temple but it is the religious sanctuary where people visit to seek and obtain blessings from Lord.
