Guruvayur Temple in Kerala is one of the respected temples of Lord Krishna. How to Reach Guruvayur Temple
By Air:
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK)which is far about the 80 km away from the Airport. You can also use Calicut International Airport (CCJ) which is about 100 km away.
From the airport take a taxi or bus to Guruvayur. Taxis are available outside the airport and the ride takes about 1.5-2 hours from Cochin or 2-2.5 hours from Calicut.(https://www.templedairy.in/how-to-reach-guruvayur-temple/)
By Train:
The closest railway station is Guruvayur Railway Station (GUV)this station is about just 1 km from the temple. It has limited connectivity.
A better option is Thrissur Railway Station (TCR) which is far of 29 km away which connects to major cities like Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
From Thrissur take a taxi (30 minutes),bus, or local train to Guruvayur to have a safe reach to the temple. From Guruvayur station you need to walk (10 minutes) or take an auto-rickshaw to the temple.
By Bus:
Guruvayur is well connected by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private buses from cities like Kochi (90 km), Thrissur (29 km) and Trivandrum.
Buses drop you at Guruvayur Bus Stand, near the temple (5-minute walk). Frequent buses run every 5 minutes from Thrissur.
By Car/Taxi:
Guruvayur is 4 km from National Highway-66. Drive from Thrissur (30 minutes), Kochi (1.5 hours) or other nearby cities.
Taxis or rented cars are available from airports, railway stations or cities. Parking is available near the temple.
West Entrance and Additional Facilities
The West Entrance has a paid facility center (₹30 for bathing, ₹10 for toilets, ₹10 per bag for six hours). It’s less crowded than the East. There’s a dormitory (men on first floor, women on second), lift, reception, dressing rooms, charging points, mirrors, and well-maintained wash basins. After freshening up, I attended Seveli, giving my bags to my brother to avoid delays.
Guruvayur Temple Seveli Procession
No ticket is needed to enter when the temple is open (7:00 AM, 4:30 PM, 9:30 PM for Seveli). Seveli is a procession where Kutti Krishnan (Utsava Moorthy) is placed on an elephant and taken around the inner courtyard. You can watch or join, chanting “Hare Rama, Hare Krishna” (slow in the first round, faster later). It’s joyful, with no pushing unless you’re too close to the elephant. Seveli is as significant as Moolavar darshan, especially on Ekadashi and Thiruvonam Nakshatram.
Darshan Guidelines
Try Seveli at standard morning timings (7:00 AM). For darshan, queue or buy a ticket, deposit mobiles, and follow the dress code (men: veshti, no shirts). Visit Ayyappan and Bhagavathy Amman shrines. Darshan stops during Seveli, so stand near the flagpole for a brief, clear view of Kutti Krishnan. Move with the elephant or stay aside, as standing still isn’t allowed for long.
Senior Citizen and Special Darshan
Senior citizens (60+) can show Aadhaar for darshan from 4:30 AM–7:30 AM and 4:30 PM–7:30 PM (no companions). Physically challenged individuals get free, quick darshan. After Seveli, we ate at Ganapathy Bhavan near the West Entrance (appam, masala dosa ₹80 each).
Avoiding Crowds and Festival Timings
Check Guruvayur Devaswom’s website for festival dates to avoid crowds. Skip school holidays and weekends. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays (especially mornings) are less crowded for quick free darshan. See Kutti Krishnan at the flagpole during Seveli. Rudra Theertham pond (nearby) is significant but not for bathing—sprinkle water only.
Luggage and Additional Tips
The West Entrance cloakroom is less crowded than the East. Mornings are quieter for darshan and luggage counters. Depositing luggage took 45 minutes (₹10 per mobile/power bank). Buy ₹1000 tickets offline (₹4500 for five). For Nirmalya Darshan (3:00 AM), queue by 7:30 PM the previous night or buy a ₹1000 ticket for quick access. It’s special, with Krishna in sandalwood for five minutes.
Nirmalya Darshan Details
Join the free darshan queue by 7:30 PM for Nirmalya Darshan (3:00 AM) or use a ₹1000 ticket. Up to 2000 people may queue. Nirmalya Darshan allows closer viewing near the steps, unlike regular darshan. The East Entrance has a ₹1000 entry point for priority darshan.

Temple Timings: The temple opens at 3:00 AM and closes at 9:15 PM with a break from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Morning darshan (3:00 AM–12:30 PM) is less crowded.
Best Time to Visit: Arrive early (before 4:30 AM) to avoid long queues, especially for Nirmalya Darshanam at 3:00 AM.
Queue System: General darshan is free but may take 1.5–4 hours. For faster darshan, buy a Special Darshan ticket (Rs. 1000 per person or Rs. 4500 for 5 people) at the temple counter or online. This takes about 10–40 minutes
