History Of Kanaka Durga Temple

Hindu temple of Kanaka Durga Temple is situated in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh of India. This is situated in Indrakeeladri hill and very near to the Krishna river, which is found in Andhra Pradesh. This temple is specifically devoted to Kanaka Durga Devi or popularly known as Durga. Some folks thought that she came into being by the mere hand of the goddess (in fact, she was born) and that she is very strong.

The legend arises that one day the demon king Mahishasura was an inciter of unexpected incidents. Once, there was a saint named Indrakila who began to appeal to the Goddess Durga in his prayers. Instead, he asked her to keep these in mind and to help keep the wicked demons from getting to him. He nodded and stood on Indrakeeladri. He also killed Mahishasura and provided justice to the Vijayawadas. Ways to Reach the Temple

• A There are three ways to reach the temple on Indrakeeladri Hill. First, you can go directly by bus or your own vehicle to the top of the hill.
• Second, you can take a lift from a building at the base of the hill to reach the temple.
• Third, you can climb the steps from the base of the hill to reach the temple on foot. you can park our vehicle at the base and are taking the lift to the temple. There’s a parking fee here—you need to pay ₹50.
• There are fewer vehicles here, as many locals prefer to visit the temple from this route. They often come here to have darshan of the Goddess before heading to their offices or businesses.
• You’ll also find some shops here where you can buy items needed for pooja. The building you see over there has the lift that takes you to the temple. Those who want to take the lift should go this way, while those who prefer to climb the steps should go from the other side.
• There are paid luggage counters and footwear stands here as well. This is the entrance to the steps route. Some devotees light lamps here before heading for darshan. At the entrance of this gate, you can see idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga, and Lord Hanuman.

Inside the Temple Complex

• On either side of the entrance, there are temples for Lord Ganesha and Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman). Those taking the steps route often visit these deities before proceeding.
• Some devotees take a vow to climb the steps to fulfill their prayers, and they use this route for that purpose. There are a total of 400 steps, and it takes about 10 to 20 minutes to reach the temple.
• During festival times, thousands of devotees use the steps route for darshan. Since we came on a weekday, there aren’t many devotees here, so we’re taking the lift to the temple.
• The lifts are at the top floor of this building. The same lifts are used for both free darshan and special darshan devotees. These lifts take us to the seventh floor.
• Additionally, on the third floor of this building, they provide annadanam (free meals). The offices that maintain the temple are also located in this building. On the way to the lifts, there are prasadam counters where you can buy prasadam after your darshan. On normal days, there are no lines here—you can directly go to the lift.

Temple Timings and Darshan Experience

• As soon as you step out of the lift, you’ll see the temple’s gopuram courtyard. Devotees who have completed their darshan often rest here for a while. The Durga Malleswara Temple’s timings are from 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and then from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
• During the day, many visitors from other towns come to the temple, while in the evening, mostly locals visit to have darshan of the Goddess. The entry for all types of darshan is from this side.
• At 00:03:40: Apart from the main Kanaka Durga Temple, there are a few other temples within the complex. After visiting all the temples, we exit from this side. From 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, there’s usually a large crowd, but after 10:00 AM, the crowd reduces significantly.

• Apart from free darshan, the temple also offers special darshan options at ₹100, ₹300, and ₹500. For ₹100 and ₹300 darshan, the queue is shorter, and for ₹500, you get Antaralaya Darshan, which means you can go closer to the sanctum and have a more intimate darshan of the Goddess
• In the Kalagnanam written by Brahmamgaru, there’s a mention of this temple. It states that when the Krishna River floods and touches the nose ring of the Goddess, the Kali Yuga will come to an end. Many people might already know this. My darshan is complete, and since there weren’t many devotees, we had a very peaceful darshan of the Goddess.
• At 00:07:03: From here, we can’t see the Garbhalaya Gopuram, so I recommend that those who came by lift go up to see the gopuram at least once. You can also buy clothes of the Goddess here. First-time visitors often get confused about where to break coconuts, so I’ll clarify that for you. You can’t break coconuts inside the main temple, but on the way to the Malleswara Swamy Temple, there’s a designated place for breaking coconuts.

Other Temples on Indrakeeladri Hill

• apart from the main Kanaka Durga Temple, there are other temples on this hill that we should visit. If you head north from the Goddess’s temple,
• you’ll find the Subrahmanya Swamy Temple and the Nataraja Swamy Temple. A little further ahead, there’s the place to break coconuts. Beyond that, you’ll reach the Malleswara Swamy Temple.
• There are two routes to the Malleswara Swamy Temple—one through steps and the other via a ramp. Those who can’t climb down the steps can use the ramp. While descending the steps, you can see the various avatars of the Goddess.
• After descending the steps and proceeding further, we reach the Malleswara Swamy Temple. Usually, there’s a long queue here, but since there aren’t many devotees today, we’re heading directly for darshan.
• The line here moves very slowly, and it takes more time for darshan here compared to the Goddess’s temple. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped as Malleswara Swamy in the form of a Shivalinga. You can also have darshan of Kalabhairava, the bodyguard of Lord Shiva. Since there were fewer devotees, the darshan here was also very peaceful.
