About Chamundeshwari Temple
The Shri Chamundeshwari Temple is located in Mysuru district, Karnataka, 13 kilometers from Mysuru city, on the Chamundi Hills. Since this temple is situated at an altitude of 3,489 feet above sea level, this hill is called the crown of Mysuru. On the way to the temple, you can see forests surrounded by natural beauty, various types of trees, birds, and the beautiful city of Mysuru. This is one of the eight hills in the group, and the Shri Chamundeshwari Temple is located on the western side. In ancient times, this hill was called Mahabaladri, but over time, due to Chamundeshwari Devi, it was renamed Chamundi Hill.
Mahishasura Statue and Temple Entrance
After getting off the bus and walking a little forward, you’ll see the statue of Mahishasura in front. Here, Ammavaru (the Goddess) is said to have killed the demons Chanda, Munda, and Mahishasura. From this statue, if you go a little to the left, you’ll see the temple’s gopuram. [Music] About 100 meters before the temple, on the right side, you’ll see a building called the Annaprasadalaya, also known as Dasoha Bhavan.

Now let’s learn about the temple’s history. “Lankayam Shankari Devi, Kamakshi Kanchikapure, Prajyumane Shrinkaladevi, Chamundi Krounchapattane, Alampure Jogulamba, Shrishaila Bramaramika, Kolhapure Mahalakshmi, Mahure Ekavirika, Ujjanyam Mahankali, Pitikyam Puruhutika, Odanyayam Girijadevi, Manikya Dakshavatake, Harikshetre Kamarupa, Prayage Madhaveshwari, Jwalayam Vaishnavi Devi, Gaya Mangalya Gaurika, Varanashrayam Vishalakshi, Kashmirestu Saraswati.” This is the Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram. In this, it mentions “Chamundi Krounchapattane,” which is this Mysuru Shri Chamundeshwari Temple. This peetha is also called Krouncha Peetha. Due to the insult of her husband Shiva by her father Daksha Prajapati, Sati Devi jumped into the fire and sacrificed herself.
Angered by this, Shiva, in his Rudra form, destroyed Daksha and carried Sati Devi’s lifeless body on his shoulder, performing the Rudra Tandava. Mahavishnu, with his Sudarshana Chakra, cut Sati Devi’s body into 18 pieces, and her hair fell on these Chamundi Hills, making this temple the fourth among the 18 Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas. Meanwhile, in ancient times, a demon named Mahishasura, with the head of a buffalo, ruled this area as his kingdom. With the desire to conquer the three worlds, he performed severe penance to Brahma. Brahma appeared and asked him to choose a boon.
Mahishasura asked for immortality, to never face death. Brahma said that every living being in this creation must face death, and no one can change that, so he asked him to choose another wish. Mahishasura then said that since a woman is the weakest in creation, he should not die by anyone’s hand except a woman’s. Brahma granted this boon. With the pride of this boon, Mahishasura tortured the gods and people. The gods went to Vishnu and Shiva, who poured all their powers into creating a beautiful, youthful, and all-powerful woman.
This power was Durga Devi. Durga Devi fought Mahishasura fiercely for nine days and killed the mighty demon on the tenth day. Hence, Durga Devi earned the name Mahishasura Mardini. The area ruled by Mahishasura was called Mahishapuram or Mahisha Ooru. Over time, Mahishuru became Mahisuru and later Mysuru. It is believed that this temple was built in the 12th century by the Hoysala rulers. The gopuram was built in the 17th century by the Vijayanagara rulers.
