Ashadhi Ekadashi generally falls in June or July, while Kartiki Ekadashi falls in October or November. These services help the devotees connect with Lord Vithoba through prayers, songs, and offerings. It is a serene and spiritual experience for all who enter the temple.
How to Reach Pandharpur
First, let’s talk about how to reach Pandharpur. You have three options by road. If you want to come to Pandharpur, you will get connectivity from everywhere—Mumbai, Pune, Shirdi, Nashik, Aurangabad. You will get good connectivity to Pandharpur. If you have your own car, you can also come by road. The roads are quite good.
The second option is by train. If you want to come by train, you will find Pandharpur railway station, but it is possible that you might not get a long-distance train directly to Pandharpur. So, I would request you to change trains at a major station. You can get connecting trains from Mumbai, Miraj, Kurduwadi, and Shirdi. So, according to your route, you can reach Pandharpur railway station.
The third option is by airplane, i.e., by flight. If you come by flight, there is an airport in Solapur, but the distance from Solapur to Pandharpur is 75 kilometers. If you don’t get a direct connection, you can come to Pune and from there travel by road, which is about 200 kilometers.
Accommodation Arrangements in Pandharpur
Now, let’s talk about how to reach the temple, i.e., how to get darshan of Vitthal Maharaj and Rukmini Mata. We have come with this plan. I want to tell you that while there is the main Vitthal-Rukmini temple in Pandharpur, there are also many other temples here, just like Mathura and Vrindavan are cities of temples. Similarly, Pandharpur can also be called a city of temples.
Before visiting Rukmini, let’s know about accommodation. There are very good arrangements in Pandharpur. You will find dharamshalas at very affordable rates, trust rooms, and also Gajanan Maharaj’s trust rooms. If we talk about private hotels, you will find those at reasonable prices too.
Let’s talk about which dharamshalas you should consider. Some names are Maheshwari Dharamshala, Padmashali Dharamshala, and Sharda Dharamshala. All these are within one to one and a half kilometers from the temple premises. If you come from the railway station to the temple, an auto will charge about 20 rupees per person, and if you book the whole auto, it will be about 100 rupees.
If you want to stay near the temple, check out hotels or dharamshalas. At Gajanan Swami Trust, you can also get rooms. The cost of a room is between 400 and 700 rupees, depending on the number of people. In a dharamshala, the cost can be around 250-300 rupees. If you don’t get a dharamshala, you can stay at Gajanan Swami Trust.
If I talk about the main Gajanan Swami temple, it is in a village in the district, which I will cover in another video. For now, at the Gajanan Swami Trust in Pandharpur, you can get rooms, but you might have to wait for about an hour.
Another option is the Vitthal-Rukmini Temple Trust’s Bhakt Niwas. There is also MTDC accommodation. The cost is about 400 rupees for a room for four people. There are also Vedant Bhakt Niwas and VPN Bhakt Niwas, where the cost is about 600 rupees for four people.
So, according to your needs, you can choose to stay at a dharamshala, Gajanan Swami Trust, or a private hotel, where the cost is about 800 to 1000 rupees per day.
Best Time to Visit Pandharpur
Now, let’s talk about the best time to visit Pandharpur. If you do not like crowds and want to do darshan peacefully and quickly, avoid visiting during major festivals like Makar Sankranti, Ram Navami, Ashadhi Ekadashi, Krishna Janmashtami, and in the month of Kartik (October), as there are huge crowds during these times. On other days, you can have a peaceful darshan.
Online Darshan Facility
If you want to avoid lines, there is also an online darshan facility. If you stand in line, it can take one to two hours for darshan, but with online booking, you can get darshan within half an hour. Visit the official Vitthal Rukmini Temple website, select your date and time, book, and print your ticket. Carry a government ID with you. With an online pass, you will not have to stand in line.
Ritual Bath in Chandrabhaga River
Before darshan, all devotees bathe in the Chandrabhaga river, which is half a kilometer from the temple and within walking distance. The river is named Chandrabhaga because it takes a crescent shape near Pandharpur.
Darshan Timings and Waiting Period
If you stand in line, it will take about one to one and a half hours for darshan, but during festivals like Ram Navami, Krishna Janmashtami, Kartik month, Magh month, and Makar Sankranti, it can take two to three hours.
Food Arrangements in Pandharpur
There is no problem with food and drink in Pandharpur. There are many restaurants and hotels. You can eat wherever you like. At Gajanan Swami Trust, you get a meal for 35 rupees, and you can eat as much as you want. Even if you are not staying there, you can go and eat.
Recommended Duration of Stay
How many days should you plan for Pandharpur? At least two days are recommended. In two days, you can visit all the main temples and have a relaxed darshan of Vitthal and Rukmini Mata.
Other Places to Visit in Pandharpur
Other places to visit in Pandharpur include:
- Kundali Temple (near the Chandrabhaga river)
- Namdev Payari (steps named after the devotee Namdev)
- Gopalpur (another temple area)
- Vishnupad (footprints of Lord Vishnu in the middle of the Chandrabhaga river)
- Padmavati Mata temple (within Pandharpur)
For local sightseeing, an auto will charge about 1000 to 1500 rupees and will take you to all these places in about four to five hours.
Prasad Arrangements
After darshan, you can get prasad from the trust’s counter near the temple.
Estimated Total Expenses
If you plan a two-day stay, travel by auto, and stay at a trust accommodation, the total cost for a family of four will be around 5000 to 6000 rupees. This does not include your train, bus, or flight tickets—just the local expenses in Pandharpur.
