Ranganathaswamy Temple Darshan Timings

Today we are going to discuss about the largest Hindu temple in the world. This sacred temple, where Lord Sri Ranganatha resides, is a divine pilgrimage site. It is believed to be the earthly Vaikuntham, where daily rituals are performed. This is also the temple where the body of Ramanujacharya, who passed away 860 years ago, is still preserved. Many of us aspire to visit this temple, and today, I’ll take you on a journey to explore it.

This temple is the largest Hindu temple in the world, featuring a total of 21 gopurams (tower gateways). Typically, temples have two to four gopurams, which we consider large, but this temple boasts 21. The main Rajagopuram here is the tallest in the world.

I’m excited to show you this magnificent temple in today’s article. Additionally, I’ll provide complete details on how to reach this temple from the Telugu states, where to stay, food options, and more.

Viswaroopa Seva

The Viswaroopa Seva is performed every morning at 6:4: 00 AM and is one of the rituals important both for Srirangam Temple and its followers. This seva is the first of the day puja during which the deity is awakened from sleep with music and prayer. Many people come to pray in large groups to receive divine blessings as witnessed from the early morning showering. Viswaroopa Seva lets one get glimpse of Lord Ranganathaswamy in his full glory with beautiful ornaments and silk clothes. General Information: Viswaroopa Seva can be availed at Rs. 100 per Head and bookings can be done both online or from the temple ticket counter itself.

Also as the number of participants of this seva is limited, it is advised to arrive early on. The seva tends to take approximately thirty minutes and at the end, the priests at the temple offer their blessings. Viswaroopa Seva is ritualistic and is said to be auspicious and hence devotees perform the Seva to bring about contentment and satisfaction.

Location and Travel Options

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is located in Srirangam, a town situated on an island in the middle of the Kaveri River in Tamil Nadu. To reach this temple from the Telugu states, there are limited train options, mostly weekly express trains available two to three days a week.

These trains operate from Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnamnand Tirupati. If you can book these trains, you can reach Srirangam directly. If not travel to Chennai first as there are plenty of daily trains from the Telugu states to Chennai. From Chennai multiple trains are available to Srirangam.

Railway Stations and Local Transport

Srirangam has two railway stations for temple visitors. The Srirangam Railway Station is just 1 km from the temple but it’s a small station with limited train stops. Most trains from Chennai or the Telugu states don’t stop here. If you do arrive at Srirangam Railway Station autos are available outside, charging ₹80–₹100 to reach the temple.

Alternatively you can walk if you have time. The second option is Tiruchirappalli Railway Station, about 9–10 km from Srirangam. This is a major junction where many trains from the Telugu states and Chennai stop. I traveled from Tirupati to Tiruchirappalli via a weekly express train.

At Tiruchirappalli Railway Station, autos and cabs are available to reach Srirangam, charging ₹200–₹250. Public buses are also an option, costing ₹11 per person. From the station, head to the entrance arch, cross the road, and reach the bus stop. The bus crosses a bridge over the Kaveri River and drops you at a bus stand near the temple’s main Rajagopuram, which is within walking distance.

Accommodation in Srirangam

Finally, we’ve reached Srirangam! Let’s discuss where to stay, especially for Telugu visitors. The best place to stay is Yatri Nivas, managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department. It offers rooms for 2 to 8 members, including AC and non-AC options, at reasonable prices.

Book rooms a week or two in advance by calling the contact number, as offline availability is limited. Yatri Nivas is 2.2 km from Srirangam Railway Station and 2 km from the temple. It’s clean, spacious, and has a restaurant and large parking area.

If Yatri Nivas is unavailable, several hotels and lodges are near the temple, though they are slightly more expensive. There’s also an Arya Vaishya Satram near the temple, but I’m unsure if it’s exclusive to the Vaishya community.

When I inquired, no rooms were available. I’ll provide their contact details and address in the description for you to check. Staying near the temple is convenient for easy access.

Entering the Temple

When visiting the temple, enter through the southern Rajagopuram for a grand experience. The temple has 21 gopurams, all colorful except the eastern gopuram, which is painted white. I’ll explain why later. The southern Rajagopuram, the largest in India, stands at 239.5 feet with 13 stories.

Construction began under Vijayanagara King Achyuta Devaraya but was halted after his death. It was completed in 1987 by the 44th Jeeyar of Ahobila Mutt, Sri Vedanta Desika. The first floor features a tall Vishnu statue, a must-see for visitors.

Temple Layout and Historical Significance

After passing the Rajagopuram, you’ll find houses and shops inside, a tradition from ancient times when the temple was also a city. Historians believe Srirangam was a fortified city-temple. Between the first and third gopurams, it feels like a town. The temple spans 156 acres with a 4 km perimeter, featuring seven prakaras (enclosures) and 21 gopurams.

Each gopuram leads to a courtyard surrounded by high walls. While Cambodia’s Angkor Wat is often considered the largest temple, it no longer hosts active worship, making Srirangam the largest functioning Hindu temple.

Key Sights and Mandapams

At the fourth gopuram, vehicles can enter, ideal for those unable to walk. This gopuram, called Ranga Ranga Gopuram, marks the start of the main temple complex.

A cloakroom near this gopuram charges ₹5 to store shoes and bags, as they’re not allowed inside, though mobile phones are permitted without recording.

The Ranga Vilas Mandapam, near the fourth gopuram, features Vishnu avatar carvings and single-stone pillars. For ₹50, you can visit a viewpoint on this mandapam to see all 21 gopurams, a breathtaking sight.

Ramanujacharya Sannidhi

A must-visit is the Ramanujacharya Sannidhi. Ramanujacharya, who passed away 860 years ago, left his body in a meditative padmasana posture. His body is preserved with special ointments, appearing reddish and statue-like. Visitors often mistake it for a statue, but it’s his actual body, a remarkable sight. Don’t miss this sannidhi when in Srirangam.

The White Gopuram’s Tragic History

The eastern gopuram painted whit has a tragic story. In 1323 Delhi Sultanate forces attacked the temple killing 12,000 Vaishnava devotees and looting gold and jewels. To protect the sacred Namperumal idolmade of pure gold chief priest Pillai Lokachari fled to Madurai.

A devadasi named Vellayi danced for hours to distract the Sultan’s commander, leading him to the gopuram’s top and pushing him off killing him. To avoid capture she jumped to her death, invoking Lord Ranganatha. The white gopuram named Vellayi Gopuram honors her bravery and sacrifice.

Sesha Raya Mandapam

Next to the Vellayi Gopuram is the Sesha Raya Mandapam, featuring stunning single-stone carvings depicting royal war scenes. These intricate sculptures are unlike anything seen elsewhere and are a highlight of the temple.

Garuda Mandapam and Darshan

Passing the fifth gopuram, you’ll enter the Garuda Mandapam, home to India’s largest Garuda statue, standing 25 feet tall. The sixth gopuram leads to the main sanctum, where a flagpole and balipeetham are located. Darshan queues start here: free darshan and ₹100 darshan.

Animal Carvings and Spiritual Belief

On the left wall of the sixth prakara, animal carvings (Krishna, Hanuman, a lame horse, and a blind fish) are significant. It’s believed that after death, when entering Vaikuntham, you’re asked if you visited Srirangam and saw these carvings as proof. Mentioning them grants entry to Vaikuntham, according to tradition.
